Acupuncture

An alternative way to manage your pet's pain.

Uptown Animal Hospital offers acupuncture services as an alternative way to help relieve pain, promote healing, and provide a better quality of life for your pets. Dr. Jennifer Mead performs acupuncture in addition to her duties as a full-time emergency doctor. She has been practicing as a general practitioner in Washington state for a number of years and during her time practicing, she has treated many older and aging pets with arthritis. Dr. Mead began to look for other ways to help them live a longer, more pain-free life without the use of multiple drugs, which led her to participate in an intensive training course held by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS). Through acupuncture, Dr. Mead found an alternative way to help aging pets or pets in pain.

Acupuncture in animals was adopted from human acupuncture and works in much the same way. Arthritis is one of the many conditions with which acupuncture can help and in conjunction with western medicine, pets receive significant benefits. The initial consultation is an hour and then 30 minutes for each subsequent session. Treatments are typically once a week for four weeks, then every other week for another four sessions. Any additional sessions will depend on how the pet is doing. Acute injuries and conditions are relieved much faster in some dogs. The needles are not painful, and sedation is not needed for most pets. Most owners have noticed an improvement right away, but for others, it may take a few additional sessions. Like western medicine, it is not a miracle cure but rather a time-tested way of practicing medicine that can yield good results.
